\u00c5land\u2019s flag<\/strong> has a fascinating history. When Finland became independent in 1917, many \u00c5landers worried about language and culture. As a result, the need grew for a clear symbol of identity and belonging.<\/p>

At the same time, the movement for reunification with Sweden gained strength. \u00c5land had historically strong ties to the west, even though the islands were administratively part of Finland. In addition, the period was marked by major political changes in the region.<\/p>

In the end, the \u00c5land question was decided in 1921 by the League of Nations after a long debate. The decision was that \u00c5land would remain part of Finland, but with extensive autonomy. However, it took time before a flag of its own was officially approved.<\/p>

Early uses of flags<\/h4>

As early as 1922, \u00c5landers used an unofficial blue-and-yellow flag. There were several versions. The most common had horizontal stripes of equal width. Another version had a narrower yellow stripe and resembled the Swedish flag\u2014but without the vertical arm. Blue and yellow were popular partly because of Sweden, and partly because they are also found in \u00c5land\u2019s coat of arms.<\/p>

The design process for \u00c5land\u2019s official flag<\/h4>

When a new design was developed in the early 1950s, several alternatives were proposed. First, a Scandinavian cross flag with a blue field and a yellow cross with a blue cross in the middle was presented. However, it looked too similar to Sweden\u2019s flag and was therefore rejected. Several other ideas were then discussed, such as three vertical stripes in blue\u2013yellow\u2013blue, or a version of Finland\u2019s flag with an additional yellow cross. Another solution was to add a red cross in the Swedish style.<\/p>

\u00c5land\u2019s flag \u2013 the final version<\/h4>

After a long process, the current Nordic cross flag in blue, yellow, and red was finally adopted. \u00c5land\u2019s official flag was first hoisted on 3 April 1954 in Mariehamn.<\/p>
