For hundreds of years, shipping has been permanently linked to Åland’s economic and cultural history. Since they gained self-government in 1920, Åland became a base for the largest commercial deep-sea sailing ships in the world, which, among other things, operated the wheat route, often called “The Great Grain Race”.

Herzogin Cecilie, the legendary four-masted ship of the “Sail Age”, remains unforgettable in maritime history. From its time as a training ship to its role in the Åland fleet and tragic end, the ship’s legacy lives on through artefacts at the Åland Maritime Museum.
Mariehamn was founded in 1861 while Åland and Finland were part of the great Russian Empire. Mary, consort of Czar Alexander II in Russia, gave the city her name.
